Reddam Racing's undefeated 2-year-old male champion Nyquist completed his cross-country trip late in the afternoon of March 29 and arrived at Gulfstream Park, where he is scheduled to make his next start in $1 million Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I) April 2.
Trained by Doug O'Neill, the 3-year-old Uncle Mo colt left California Tuesday morning and entered the Gulfstream barn area at 5:35 p.m. EDT after traveling through the traffic and thunderstorms in South Florida. O'Neill gave Nyquist several turns around the shedrow before the three-time grade I winner settled into his stall.
"He certainly didn't lose any energy," O'Neill said after the colt arrived. "It's an honor walking a champ like him. His energy looks great. It looks like we really got lucky with the weather. It was nice and cool on the van ride, so we're happy."
In the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby, Nyquist could face as many as 10 challengers, Gulfstream officials said, led by Shadwell Stable's undefeated multiple grade II winner Mohaymen, who has been based in South Florida with trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and who won two grade II stakes—the Lambholm South Holy Bull and Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth—at Gulfstream.
O'Neill said Nyquist will exercise on the Gulfstream main track at 7:30 a.m. March 30.
