High Winds Force Aqueduct Cancellation

Description:

The New York Racing Association canceled Aqueduct Racetrack's live racing program April 3 because of extremely high winds in the New York metropolitan area.

With sustained winds of 30 miles per hour and gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour, track management and jockey representatives jointly decided to cancel the day's card in the interest of ensuring safety of the horses and riders.

"We were hoping that the wind would die down in time for racing this afternoon," said Martin Panza, NYRA’s senior vice president of racing operations, "but we decided it was in our best interest to exercise caution rather than put our horses and jockeys in any kind of danger."

Sunday’s feature race, the $200,000 Top Flight Invitational Handicap (gr. III), will be rescheduled for a later date.

Simulcasting will remain available at Aqueduct. Live racing is scheduled to resume April 6.
