What looked like a field of eight a few days earlier could approach 13 for the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) April 9.
Keeneland officials April 3 said Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Stonestreet Stables' Zulu, trained by Todd Pletcher, is expected for the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass. Zulu, a 3-year-old Bernardini colt, won his first starts by a combined 9 1/4 lengths before his second-place finish to Mohaymen in the Feb. 27 Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II).
Zulu most recently worked a half-mile in :49 at Palm Beach Downs.
Other probable starters for the Blue Grass are American Dubai, Brody's Cause, Crescent Drive, Donegal Moon, Goats Town, Hint of Roses, Laoban, My Man Sam, Pinson, Star Hill, Twizz, and Zapperini.
Meanwhile, the probable field for the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) for 3-year-old fillies remained at four: Carina Mia, Cathryn Sophia, Rachel's Valentina, and Weep No More. The 1 1/16-mile Ashland also will be run April 9.
Cathryn Sophia, owned by Cash is King and trained by John Servis, is undefeated in four starts with a combined winning margin of 41 1/2 lengths. The Street Boss filly worked a half-mile in :48 1/5 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 3/5 April 3 at Keeneland.
"I'm tickled to death with (the work)," Servis said. "If you can't be happy with that, you're not a happy guy."
Cathryn Sophia in her last start won the one-turn-mile Davona Dale Stakes (gr. II) by seven lengths at Gulfstream Park. The Ashland will be her first start around two turns.
The Ashland offers 170 points—100 to the winner—on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks standings. Servis said if Cathryn Sophia does well in the Ashland and goes on to the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), she would stay at Keeneland until a week before the race at Churchill Downs.
