Keeneland opens its spring meet this Friday, and the marquee event follows just one day later – the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. With 170 Kentucky Derby points up for grabs, this year the race has attracted an overflow field of 16 vying for a spot in the Kentucky Derby and the lion’s share of the $1-million purse. Learn more about each of the entrants below.
1. Lookin for a Kiss (50-1)

Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione Trainer: Michael Tomlinson Owner: Michael Bruder Career record: 2 starts - 1 win - 1 second - 0 thirds Career earnings: $28,200 Earnings per start: $14,100 Pedigree: Lookin At Lucky – Blowing Kisses, by Vindication Color: Chestnut Running style: Stalker Notable achievements and interesting facts: Lookin for a Kiss enters the Blue Grass off of just two career starts including one win and one runner-up finish. The colt spent the winter in Florida where he made his debut in February as a 3-year-old. He was recently transferred to the barn of trainer Michael Tomlinson and makes his first start for that trainer here.
2. Donegal Moon (5-1)

He lost his rider in his next start and disappointed in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes on Jan. 30, but rebounded with an easy allowance win last month at Parx. Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the race three times, including last year with Carpe Diem.
3. Cherry Wine (12-1)

Royce, by Unbridled’s Song Color: Gray or Roan Running style: Closer Notable achievements and interesting facts: Cherry Wine is one of the more experienced horses in the field having raced seven times including two straight wins before a good fourth-place finish in the Rebel Stakes just three weeks ago. Jockey Corey Lanerie chose to ride Cherry Wine over another Blue Grass entrant, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile third-place finisher Brody’s Cause. Trainer Dale Romans won the Blue Grass in 2012 with Dullahan.
4. Zulu (5-2)

Jockey: Javier Castellano Trainer: Todd Pletcher Owner: Stonestreet Stables, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith Career record: 3 starts - 2 wins - 1 second - 0 thirds Career earnings: $126,000 Earnings per start: $42,000 Pedigree: Bernardini – Temporada, by Summer Squall Color: Bay Running style: Stalker Notable achievements and interesting facts: Zulu debuted a winner in December and won again at Gulfstream Park in January. He next tried graded stakes company and finished second to then-undefeated Mohaymen in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Zulu has all-star connections in trainer Todd Pletcher, jockey Javier Castellano and ownership group Stonestreet Stables and Coolmore. He was bought for $900,000 as a 2-year-old.
5. Crescent Drive (20-1)

Jockey: James Graham Trainer: Tom Amoss Owner: Paul Van Doren Career record: 4 starts - 1 win - 1 second - 2 thirds Career earnings: $48,804 Earnings per start: $12,201 Pedigree: Flower Alley – Patience Drive, by Pulpit Color: Bay Running style: Closer Notable achievements and interesting facts: After beginning his career in Canada, Crescent Drive enters the Blue Grass off a third-place finish in a stakes race in Texas. The colt has never finished worse than third in a four-race career and his sire (father) is Flower Alley, the same as 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another.
6. Brody’s Cause (4-1)

Jockey: Luis Saez Trainer: Dale Romans Owner: Albaugh Family Stable Career record: 5 starts - 2 wins - 0 seconds - 1 third Career earnings: $523,138 Earnings per start: $104,628 Pedigree: Giant’s Causeway – Sweet Breanna, by Sahm Color: Bay Running style: Closer Notable achievements and interesting facts: In the Blue Grass Brody’s Cause returns to the site of his greatest triumph. He won the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland last October and also finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile behind early Derby favorite Nyquist over the same Keeneland course later that month. Trainer Dale Romans completed the Breeders’ Futurity-Blue Grass double in 2012 with Dullahan, though Brody’s Cause’s owner and jockey have never won the race before. Brody’s Cause was a $350,000 auction purchase.
7. Laoban (12-1)

Jockey: Jose Lezcano Trainer: Eric Guillot Owner: McCormick Racing and Southern Equine Stable Career record: 4 starts - 0 wins - 2 seconds - 1 third Career earnings: $101,250 Earnings per start: $25,313 Pedigree: Uncle Mo – Chattertown, by Speightstown Color: Dark Bay or Brown Running style: Front runner Notable achievements and interesting facts: Though Laoban hasn’t yet won a race, he finished third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and second in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes in his two starts this year. A son of leading first-crop sire Uncle Mo, Laoban ships to Keeneland from southern California for this race, which would be the first Blue Grass Stakes win for his connections.
8. Twizz (12-1)

One of three horses trained by Mike Maker entered in this race, Twizz was a $75,000 purchase as a 2-year-old.

Indy Color: Chestnut Running style: Stalker Notable achievements and interesting facts: Goats Town is still a maiden (has never won a race) but hasn’t finished worse than third in his last four starts. Trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Goats Town is owned by Calumet Farm, the historic Lexington farm that bred two Triple Crown winners in the mid-1900s before being revitalized by businessman Brad Kelley a few years ago.
10. American Dubai (20-1)

A win would be the first Blue Grass score for American Dubai’s owner, trainer and jockey.

Jockey: Emisael Jaramillo Trainer: George Arnold II Owner: Calumet Farm Career record: 5 starts - 1 win - 0 seconds - 3 thirds Career earnings: $72,400 Earnings per start: $14,480 Pedigree: Elusive Quality – Padmore, by French Deputy Color: Bay Running style: Stalker/closer Notable achievements and interesting facts: Star Hill finished third twice and ran sixth in a Grade 3 before breaking his maiden in February at Gulfstream Park. He then jumped back into graded stakes competition in the Tampa Bay Derby, where he finished third to Kentucky Derby-bound Destin. Star Hill is a half-brother to Leigh Court, a multiple graded stakes winner named Canada’s champion 3-year-old filly of 2013.

With just one win from five starts, Pinson would undoubtedly be one of the longer shots in the field if he makes it into the race. As an also-eligible, he can’t run unless one of the main body entries scratches.
16. Hint of Roses (Also-Eligible)
Jockey: Florent Geroux Trainer: Mike Maker Owner: Ken and Sarah Ramsey Career record: 5 starts - 0 wins - 0 seconds - 1 third Career earnings: $6,063 Earnings per start: $1,213 Pedigree: Tapit – Last Kitten, by Catienus Color: Bay Running style: Closer Notable achievements and interesting facts: A horse who has yet to win a race, Hint of Roses is from the same barn as Oscar Nominated, the upset winner of last weekend’s Spiral Stakes. A son of leading sire Tapit and out of a half-sister to champion Kitten’s Joy and the dam of champion Dreaming of Anna, Hint of Roses was bred by his owners. He has managed to improve his placing in each of his five races to date, most recently finishing third in a March 19 race. Hint of Roses is also-eligible, meaning he can’t run in the race unless two of the main-body entries scratch.
