2 Guys and a Crown: Wood Memorial Stakes
Description:
Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. The focus for this edition is Saturday’s Grade 1, $1-million Wood Memorial Stakes, in which the winner earns 100 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Run over 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, N.Y., the $1-million Wood Memorial is worth 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby points for first through fourth place.
Of the last 10 Wood winners, only two exited the Gotham while six invaded from Florida.
The last horse to exit the Wood and win the Kentucky Derby was Funny Cide in 2003. In 2000, Fusaichi Pegasus scored the Wood/Kentucky Derby double.
In 2009 and 2010 highly regarded Wood winners I Want Revenge and Eskendereya missed the Kentucky Derby due to injury.
Todd Pletcher has won three of the last five editions of the Wood, with Eskendereya (2010), Gemologist (2012) and Verrazano (2013). He sends out Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Outwork in this one.
