Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. The focus for this edition is Saturday’s Grade 1, $1-million Santa Anita Derby, in which the winner earns 100 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Run over nine furlongs, the $1-million Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, is worth 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby points.
Five of the last 10 Santa Anita Derby winners ran in the San Felipe and four of those won both races.
This year's race features the top four finishers from the San Felipe - Danzing Candy, Mor Spirit, Exaggerator and Uncle Lino.
The Santa Anita Derby was run on synthetics 2008-10.
Gary Stevens is a nine-time Santa Anita Derby winner, but none since 2003 (1988, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003).
