Haras Phillipson's homebred Generosidade will look to earn her second straight marathon victory against males on the Santa Anita Park turf April 10 in the $100,000 San Juan Capistrano Stakes (gr. IIIT).
The 7-year-old Nedawi mare, who raced previously in France and was a Brazilian group I winner back in 2013, stunned in a field of 10 last time out in the 1 1/2-mile San Luis Rey (gr. IIT) March 13 on the Santa Anita turf at odds of 71-1 for trainer Paulo Lobo. She hadn't finished better than sixth in three U.S. starts leading into the San Luis Rey and will stretch out to 1 3/4 miles for the first time in the San Juan Capistrano.
BALAN: Generosidade Stuns San Luis Rey Field
The only horse entered with experience at the distance is Pablo Gomez's Quick Casablanca, a graded stakes winner back in 2014 who finished second in that year's San Juan Capistrano. Quick Casablanca, trained by Ron McAnally, was also second—1 1/2 lengths back of Generosidade—in the San Luis Rey.
Also returning from the San Luis Rey is third-place finisher Energia Fribby, a 6-year-old Anges Gold mare who completed that race's South American-bred trifecta.
The only other graded winner in Sunday's field is Blingo, who won the 2014 San Antonio (gr. II) and showed signs of life last time out on the dirt in the 1 1/2-mile Tokyo City Cup (gr. III) April 3, which followed four far-back out-of-the money finishes.
Argentine group II winner Generoso, stakes-placed Cardiac, and allowance winners A Red Tie Day, Kenjisstorm, Life's Journey, and Bourbon Soul complete the field.
