Alpha Delta Stables' homebred Lewis Bay splashed home to her second grade II score April 9 in the $300,000 Gazelle Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Back on the Aqueduct main track, where she took the Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) in November, the 3-year-old daughter of Bernardini seemed to relish the sloppy track Saturday for trainer Chad Brown with an easy 1 1/2-length victory over Royal Obsession.
Under the guidance of Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode his fifth winner on the card in the Gazelle, Lewis Bay surged by the frontrunners in the final turn without asking from her jockey and cruised to the wire in 1:52.60 for 1 1/8 miles.
Clair de Lune led early, ticking off fractions of :23.93, :48.67, and 1:13.88 through six furlongs, but faded under pressure from Mo d'Amour late in the final turn. Mo d'Amour hung on for third.
The winner paid $5, $3.10, and $2.50 across the board. Royal Obsession brought $3.70 and $3.20, and Mo d'Amour delivered $3.70 to show.
