The third and final leg of Oaklawn Park’s 3-year-old Kentucky Derby prep series is the 1 1/8-mile, $1-million Arkansas Derby. The race has been contested annually since 1936 and has produced six Kentucky Derby winners, including Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones in 2004. The most recent Kentucky Derby winner to run in the Arkansas Derby was American Pharoah, who went on to win the Triple Crown in 2015.
This year, American Pharoah’s trainer, Bob Baffert, returns with Cupid, who won the Rebel Stakes last month. But trainer Todd Pletcher is looking to reclaim the Rebel Stakes crown this year with Gettysburg after winning both the 2013 and 2014 editions of this race with Overanalyze and Danza, respectively.
Let’s take a look at all 12 horses running in this edition of the Arkansas Derby.
No. 1: Discreetness (20-1)

Notable achievements and interesting facts: Discreetness has unofficially been on the Derby trail since November, finishing fourth behind Mo Tom in the Street Sense Stakes before winning the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes, a race that seems to have been an important one for the Oaklawn preps with the top two horses in it stealing headlines in Arkansas. Discreetness won the Smarty Jones Stakes in his 3-year-old debut but hasn’t been able to find the same form at the graded-stakes level, finishing seventh in both the Southwest and Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn this spring.

Cutacorner is experienced at the stakes level, competing in four stakes races, including the last two Arkansas Derby prep races. His best result was a pair of fourth-place finishes. In one of those fourths, the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes, Cutacorner finished 1 ½ lengths behind two fellow Arkansas Derby runners.

Creator was a $440,000 purchase as a yearling and is out of Morena, Peru’s champion 2-year-old filly, 3-year-old filly and older female in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Unbridled Outlaw has been off the board only once, in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but he did finish third in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes and comes into the Arkansas Derby off a second-place finish in an Oaklawn allowance/optional claiming race. Unbridled Outlaw was produced by a Grade 2 winner and was sold for $330,000 as a yearling.

Both of his wins have come at three-quarters of a mile, but both of his seconds were in races at 1 1/16 miles. Trainer Ron Moquett ran Far Right in the Kentucky Derby in 2015 and co-owner Robert LaPenta won the 2008 Belmont Stakes with Da’ Tara and the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with War Pass. He’s also finished second in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes with Ice Box and Andromeda’s Hero, respectively.
