Description:

Welcome to Los Ponies Longshots! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras – Los Ponies to those who follow him on Twitter – will provide two or three longshots at 8-to-1 odds or better on the morning line that he identifies as strong value bets. Contreras also will map out a betting strategy for how to play his selections and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love a longshot!
Saturday, Race 3, Los Alamitos Race Course, 5:58 p.m. ET
#7 Lovely Raquel (12-1): She was away last in a field of ten last time out and only beat one home. That wasn’t too bad of an effort considering the entire field was covered by about six lengths at the finish line. The downhill course can be tricky, so I actually like the switch to dirt and I also like the outside post position here. She also shows a pair of improved workouts since her last race.

#5 King Budrick (10-1): This gelding might not be as classy as some of the others, but I liked they way he overcame trouble in his first start of the year to win by a neck. He’s a perfect 1-for-1 on this track, and his closing style might fit this race well if the favorites set a fast early pace.
