Sherman Diary: Cusp of Crowning Achievement (También en Español)

Art Sherman was 18 years old when he accompanied Swaps in a boxcar from California to Louisville to win the 1955 Kentucky Derby. He returned to Churchill Downs at age 77 as the trainer of California Chrome and has taken followers of America’s Best Racing every step of the way on a journey that has his sensational California-bred on the cusp of the first Triple Crown in 36 years and racing immortality.
Here is the final installment of his Belmont Stakes diary, written with Tom Pedulla:
ELMONT, N.Y. – What a wild ride this has been. The Belmont Stakes will be our third race in five weeks, but so much else gets jammed into those five weeks. The way California Chrome has performed and the nice people we met along the way, that has made it a wonderful ride.
The outpouring of support for this horse on both coasts and everywhere in between is unbelievable. This is one of those horses that everybody roots for. He is a one-in-a-zillion kind of horse. You never expect to have owners purchase a mare named Love the Chase for $8,000, breed her to Lucky Pulpit for $2,000 and get yourselves a California-bred who just might become the 12th Triple Crown champion.
Can he do it? The best way to answer that is to say we know we have done everything we can to help him get the mile and a half in the Belmont Stakes. I always worry about how he is going to bounce back from one start to the next. He handled the two-week turnaround from the mile-and-a-quarter Kentucky Derby to the mile-and-three-sixteenths Preakness just fine. He maintained his weight. That chestnut coat of his could not shine any brighter in the morning sun.

He might just have the physical and mental makeup you need to meet the Triple Crown challenge. Mentally, I don’t worry about him at all. He draws a crowd wherever he goes now; he loves it. If you visit his stall, he is happy to have you – as long as you bring a couple of cookies. If he is headed to or from the track and a fan takes out a camera, he will stop to allow that person to take his photo. He is a rock star, and by this point he sure knows it.
Luck is part of this. Thankfully, we’ve drawn a good post for every leg of the Triple Crown: post five for the Derby, three for the Preakness and now two for the Belmont. Our jockey, Victor Espinoza, will be able to get a good view of which horses are showing early speed and he will definitely be able to save ground entering the first turn.
The start is going to be very important for our horse, even going a mile and a half. I’ve told those who will work with him at the starting gate to make certain his feet are in good position and his head is straight. He has a tendency to be what I call a “rocker” in the gate, meaning he may swing his head from side to side. We all know he has really got a target on his back this time, but I am looking for a clean break and for him to get away smoothly. If that happens, I’ll feel really good.
Victor is a good judge of pace. California Chrome will allow Victor to place him wherever he thinks he needs him to be. With 12 races under his belt, this horse’s seasoning provides another huge advantage. When people ask if he can stay the mile and a half, I look at it that he has already outrun his pedigree and we don’t really know whether any of them can go that distance. It is, after all, uncharted territory.
The key for Victor will be to avoid the temptation of moving too soon. This race will be won in the last quarter of a mile. I am confident in my horse. If he gets a good trip, I really think you will see what you waited so long for, the next Triple Crown champion.

Se lleva bien con la multitud donde quiera que vaya; lo disfruta. Si lo visitas en el establo, está feliz que estés allí –en tanto le traigas un par de galletitas. Si es conducido a la pista o si viene de ella y un aficionado saca una cámara, se detendrá para permitir a esa persona que le tome una foto. Es una estrella de rock, y a  esta altura, con seguridad sabe que lo es.
La suerte es parte de esto. Afortunadamente, hemos logrado tener una buena posición de partida para cada carrera de la Triple Corona: cajón cinco para el Derby, tres para el Preakness y ahora dos para el Belmont. Nuestro jinete, Victor Espinoza, será capaz de tener una buena perspectiva de cuáles caballos están mostrando rápida aceleración y definitivamente estará en capacidad de ahorrarle terreno al ingresar a la primera curva.
La partida será algo muy importante para nuestro caballo, incluso corriendo una milla y media. He conversado con aquellos que trabajarán con él en el partidor, para que estén seguros de que sus pies estén en buena posición  y que su cabeza esté derecha. Tiene tendencia a ser lo que yo llamo un “rockero” en el partidor, lo que significa que puede menear su cabeza de lado a lado. Todos sabemos que esta vez él carga con un objetivo en su espalda, pero estoy esperando una partida limpia para él de modo que pueda irse acomodando sin sobresaltos. Si eso sucede, me sentiré realmente bien.
Víctor sabe juzgar muy bien el desarrollo y el ritmo de una carrera. California Chrome permitirá a Víctor que lo coloque donde quiera él piense que necesita estar. Con 12 carreras en su haber, esta madurez del caballo le brinda otra gran ventaja. Cuando la gente me pregunta si podrá llegar a la distancia de la milla y media, yo veo que él ya dejó atrás su pedigrí y que no sabemos en realidad si alguno de ellos pudo ir tanta distancia. Es, después de todo, territorio inexplorado.
La clave para Víctor será evitar la tentación de apresurarse con él. Esta carrera se ganará en el último cuarto de milla. Estoy muy confiado con mi caballo. Si consigue un buen desarrollo, realmente pienso que ustedes verán lo que han estado esperando por tanto tiempo, el siguiente campeón Triple Coronado.
