Nine Essential Things to Do in Louisville (Tambien en Español)

Louisville, Ky., was founded almost 250 years ago and although things like the Kentucky Derby, bourbon and baseball bats may spring to mind first, there is a lot more to this city. You’ll find the most famous options below along with some that might surprise you. It’s worth doing more than scratching the surface in a city that produces 90 percent of the disco balls in the United States. For those wanting some extra ideas, there is an exacta option for many suggestions.
1. Churchill Downs

The home of the run for the roses gets the top spot. Even without the Derby, the iconic race track would deserve a mention for its history and grandeur alone. The first time I walked from the paddock to the track apron before a race gave me goosebumps, thinking about the great horses, jockeys, trainers and owners who had walked those same steps. By all means, get to the Derby if you can but be sure to see live racing at Churchill sometime and admire the twin spires.
Exacta: Even if there’s no live racing you can still take a tour of the track and visit the Kentucky Derby Museum. The museum is fun and informative for young and old. From Derby fashions of years gone by to Derby replays and even a chance to pretend you’re a jockey in a video game, plus all the aspects of racehorse life from birth to retirement. 2. Bourbon
Sip some mint juleps, tour a distillery or hit an urban trail, just be sure to include some bourbon exploration in your itinerary. Louisville boasts Bulleit Frontier Whiskey in town and an outpost of Jim Beam and Evan Williams as well. These are all on the Bourbon trail, which covers a lot more ground in western Kentucky. There are a number of places that will coordinate your tour (and drive you), here are two: Kentucky Bourbon Boys and Mint Julep Tours. If you want to stay in Louisville, choose the Urban Bourbon Trail. These are bars/restaurants that offer a good selection of Bourbon and many are located downtown. You don’t have to drink Bourbon to complete your passport but why not?
Exacta: There is also a thriving beer scene in Louisville, some aged in bourbon barrels. Here is a great website to help you decide where to go.
3. Waterfront Park
At 85 acres along the Ohio River, this is a destination worth visiting just for the park. Add in an amphitheater with occasional concerts and the Big Four Bridge and you can spend an entire day (and night) in the area. A walking/biking option added to the bridge makes heading across the river to Jeffersonville (Indiana) very appealing. The views are wonderful. If you’re not up to the effort, you can also drive across.

Exacta: A number of bars and restaurants are in the immediate area on the Indiana side, some offering spectacular views of Louisville. Being able to take a short trip into another state for lunch or dinner is not an experience everyone gets and you’ll still be Kentuckiana!
4. Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
Baseball is America’s pastime and you can thank Louisville Slugger for countless cracks of the bat ringing out across the diamond. If you’re fascinated by unusual sights, the 120­-foot tall steel bat is reason enough for a visit to the Slugger museum. You can see bats being made and take home a souvenir.
Exacta: The Kentucky Science Center is very close, take the kids to both.
Trifecta: If the minor league team, the Louisville Bats, is in town you can see the products of the Slugger factory in action.
5. Take a drive/walk
Louisville boasts beautiful neighborhoods that are very walkable and offer historic architecture. Old Louisville has an impressive concentration of Victorian houses and if you go to the welcome center in Central Park (south of downtown) you can learn some more and get a walking tour map. If you choose to drive through the area be sure to also detour to Eastern Parkway (alternate Route 60) as the thoroughfare is lined with more lovely Victorians. For something more lively, Frankfort Avenue is full of shopping, galleries and restaurants. Baxter Ave. and Bardstown Road are also. 6. Speed Art Museum
No, it does not focus on racing of any kind. Named after J.B. Speed, it is the oldest and largest museum in Kentucky. Completely renovated, the new space offers lots of events and an eclectic array of exhibits. Artifacts, sculptures and paintings span the globe and date from ancient to very recent. There is something for everyone. Admission is free on Sundays for a few years to come, courtesy of Brown-Forman.
7. See wildlife and go underground
Children love the zoo and there is plenty to love in Louisville. From camel rides, a bird show and giraffe feeding to the award winning gorilla forest, the little ones will be enthralled. Mega Cavern is only a stone’s throw away and you can take a tour or get more active with “the only underground bike park in the world,” zip lines and even a ropes course. You can drive your own car through the cavern during the Christmas season for “Lights Under Louisville.”
Trifecta: Add No. 4 and its exacta bonus to your itinerary.
Superfecta: Add all of the ideas from No. 4 plus Kentucky Kingdom, a theme park that features rides and a water park.
8. Eat a Hot Brown
Appropriately, The Brown Hotel started this tradition almost 100 years ago. The hot brown is an open-faced sandwich with turkey, bacon, roma tomato and a mornay sauce designed to satisfy the hunger of people dancing all night. The decadent creation is now served all over town with lots of definitive opinions about where the best is served.

Exacta: Get some friends and embark on the Hot Brown Hop. There is no passport to get stamped and no guaranteed reward except a full stomach, but why not go sample a number of Hot Browns and form your own opinion?
9. Go listen to some music
With an abundance of stages around town, including the KFC Yum Center, Freedom Hall, Brown­-Forman Amphitheater at Waterfront Park, Fourth Street Live!, The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and Brown Theatre, you will probably find tunes that make your ears happy.

2. Bourbon

3. Waterfront Park

4. Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
El béisbol es el pasatiempo americano y puedes agradecer a los Louisville Slugger por innumerables roturas del bate a través del diamante. Si te fascinan las vistas raras, los bates de acero de 120­-pies son razón suficiente para una visita al museo Slugger. Puedes ver cómo se hacen los bates y llevarte uno a casa como souvenir.

6. Speed Art Museum
No, no se enfoca en carreras de ninguna clase. Llamada así por J.B. Speed, es el más antiguo y grande de los museos en Kentucky.
