MHBA’s Federico Tesio Award to Quade

Description:

Maryland Racing Commission member and former chairman Bruce Quade will receive the Maryland Horse Breeders Association’s Federico Tesio Award at its annual awards dinner, to be held April 27 in Timonium, Md.

The Tesio Award is presented in recognition for significant contributions to the state’s Thoroughbred industry and is selected when a majority of the MHBA board members determines someone has made an exceptional impact on the industry.

The award goes to an individual who has earned distinction over many years of service to the industry, or to someone who has brought great credit to Maryland racing or breeding. It was last presented in 2010. Past recipients of the award include Gov. William Donald Schaefer (1992), Allaire duPont (1993), Jim McKay (1994), John B. Franzone (2000), Hal C.B. Clagett Jr. (2009), and J. William Boniface (2010).

"It’s been many years since the board has acted because it has to be a consensus," said MHBA executive director Cricket Goodall. "In this case it was unanimous."

Quade was chairman of the racing commission from 2012 to 2015 and worked tirelessly with horsemen, the tracks, and breeders on the 10-year-agreement for racing in the state, as well as establishing the state’s Breeding Industry Task Force, which resulted in a competitive bonus program for Maryland. He was reappointed to the commission by Gov. Larry Hogan for a second four-year term in 2015.

"Bruce Quade has just had a huge impact," Goodall said. "When he took over as chairman, he just looked over the whole industry to see what was needed and what needed to be addressed."
