Trainer Mark Casse, who has had good success with offspring of Colonel John , signed on behalf of EastWest Stable for a filly by the WinStar stallion for $375,000 during the final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring 2-year-olds in training sale April 22.
Hip 1060, a filly named La Coronel, was from the Winners Circle Thoroughbreds consignment. At last year’s OBS April sale, Casse went to $350,000 to acquire grade II winner Airoforce, a Colonel John colt, for EastWest.
The trainer said there were a lot of similarities between the filly and Airoforce.
"She reminded me a lot of Airoforce," Casse said. "The Colonel Johns I have had some luck with are little taller and a little leaner with a great walk. I thought last year Airoforce was impressive on the track and I thought this filly was impressive too."
The filly is out of grade III-placed Listen, by Chester House, and is from the family of multiple grade I winner Listening and grade II winner Listen Here.
She was bred in Kentucky by Kim Nardelli, Rodney Nardelli, Susan Bunnings, A. Jaffreys, and B. Jaffreys. She was bought by Teresa and David Palmer for $37,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale.
