When Grade 1 winner I’m a Chatterbox turned out for her 2016 debut in the Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland, it was not surprising that the classy 4-year-old filly was sent off as a 1-2 favorite.
But if someone was willing to take a stand against her and formulated that opinion into a Pick 6 ticket on April 22 at the Lexington track, it could have amounted to the week’s most sensational score for a highly fortunate handicapper.
When Brooklynsway, a 25-1 shot, beat I’m a Chatterbox by a little more than a length in the Doubledogdare it opened the door for a gargantuan and simply sensational Pick 6 payoff of $120,222.60 for a $2 ticket.
Aside from Brooklynsway, who paid $52.40 to win, only one other horse returned more than $8.80 in the challenging sequence.
Late Spring, an $18.60 winner, played the role of the secondary longshot in an array of races that started mildly with wins by even-money favorite Inspire Courage ($4), Sir Dudley Digges ($8.80) and Quick Release ($8.60).
Those three combined for a $2 Pick 3 that paid just $97.80, but back-to-back wins by Late Spring and Brooklynsway – which accounted for a double paying $554.40 – upped the ante quite dramatically.
The left it to another favorite, Wagon Boss ($6.60), to complete the sequence with a dose of bookend chalk and make Pick 6 players glad they “visited” Brooklyn.

At Aqueduct on April 23, the ninth and final race taught a valuable lesson about assuming horses on the also-eligible list will not be racing that day.
Cody’s Notes drew post 14 and need two scratches in order to move into a field that was limited to 12 runners on Aqueduct’s turf course.
Having that spot on the also-eligible list and being pegged at 20-1 in the morning line probably convinced many handicappers to overlook Cody’s Notes and gloss over the fact that he ran as fast in his last turf race as anyone else in the field.
Cody’s Note was sent off at 30-1, but if anyone ignored him in the wagering, there was no missing him the final furlong when he charged to a three-quarter length victory and paid $62 to win.
The horse that Cody’s Note caught in final yards was Momma’s Mark, who was sent off at 12-1 and completed an $853 exacta.
The fireworks, however, were just starting.
Geo Niko, at 5-1, finished third to account for a $7,097 trifecta, but the best was yet to come. Sir Maurice, at 16-1, grabbed fourth and added the finishing touches on a $2 superfecta that paid a whopping $91,387.

Keeneland had two other huge payoffs last week, starting with a $64,742 Pick 5 for a 50-cent wager on April 22 that featured winners paying $24.60, $32.40, $6.40, $11.80 and $13.40.
The next day, Pick 5 players took home $33,157.75 for hitting the Pick 5 with a 50-cent ticket, thanks largely to a victory by Free Rose, who paid a whopping $112.60 for winning the ninth and final race of the day.
The rest of winners in the sequence paid $33.80, $4.40, $6.60 and $12.60.
It might have been a nice added touch, but even with that $112.60 payoff Free Rose did not earn the week’s “How did you come up with that one?” award.
That honor went to the 10th race at Woodbine on April 24.
War Fan brought a record of 1-for-18 into the race and had lost his six previous starts dating back to last July.
He was also unraced since Nov. 26, convincing handicappers to stay away from War Fan and send him off at 77-1 odds in a 6 ½-furlong claiming race.
When War Fan was 11th after the opening half-mile those odds seemed quite accurate, but in the stretch, after the gelding moved into fifth at the eighth pole, War Fan kicked into top gear and paid a week’s-best $156.70 for a $2 win bet.
Needless to say, it was a ritzy and rewarding payoff for astute racing “fans,” regardless of whether they live in Canada or even Brooklyn.
