Trainer Wesley Ward has entered three winning fillies against males in the $100,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes May 5 at Churchill Downs.
The five-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds—the lone stakes Thursday at Churchill—has attracted an expected field of nine.
All three of the fillies trained by Ward enter off debut victories in 4 1/2-furlong maiden races at the Keeneland spring meet in Con Te Partiro, Lady Aurelia, and Silvertoni.
Hat Creek Racing’s Con Te Partiro drew off in the stretch of her April 13 debut. The daughter of Scat Daddy registered a 5 1/2-length score over males. Con Te Partiro is a half sister to grade II-placed Donworth.
Silverton Hill’s Silvertoni, by Tapit , also defeated males when she led every step in her April 14 victory by two lengths. Silvertoni is out of group III-placed Somasach, by Johannesburg.
Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton, and Peter Leidel’s Lady Aurelia faced other fillies in her first start and the daughter of Scat Daddy led every step to score by 7 1/2 lengths April 21. Lady Aurelia is out of D’ Wildcat Speed, by Forest Wildcat, a horse of the year in Puerto Rico and winner of the 2005 Rampart Handicap (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.
Other first-out winners in the field include Michael Hui’s Hey Mike, who won a maiden race at Keeneland; and Marc Detampel and Tevis McCauley’s Cold Snack Thirty, who won a maiden race at Gulfstream.
