Doña Pancha Stable's 4-year-old Corona del Inca (ARG) won the Gran Premio Criadores (Arg-I) by a nose over Kiriaki (ARG) at Palermo Race Course the evening of May 1, earning an automatic berth into the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series.
Ridden by Uruguayan Pablo Falero, Corona del Inca caught pacesetter Kiriaki, part of a favored entry with stablemate Norimberga (ARG), in the last step to claim her first group stakes victory in 1:59.40 over five rivals.
The winning connections will be familiar to Breeders' Cup fans at Santa Anita Park, because Corona del Inca is raced by the same owner and trainer combination of Juan Carlos Echeverz's Doña Pancha Stable and Guillermo Frenkel Santillan that brought Calidoscopio to America to win the 2012 Breeders' Cup Marathon (gr. II).
Breeders' Cup South American representative John Fulton said late Sunday that the connections are making plans for Corona del Inca to run in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Like Calidoscopio, Corona del Inca is by Luhuk (ARG), and was bred in Argentina by Haras La Quebrada.
