A full gate of 14 is set for the Pat Day Mile (gr. III) May 7, Derby day at Churchill Downs. The one-turn-mile stakes for 3-year-olds is slated as race 10 (4:25 p.m. EDT)—the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) goes as race 12—and is worth $250,000.
Once called the Derby Trial Stakes and run a week prior to the Derby, Churchill renamed the race after the track's all-time leading rider and made it part of the Derby weekend stakes bonanza. This year's race features several horses that were on the Derby trail but failed to draw into the field.
A key player figures to be Jacks or Better Farm's Fellowship, third in the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I) behind Nyquist and Majesto. A homebred for Fred Brei's Florida outfit, he's a son of Brei's Awesome of Course.
Fellowship, who was number 21 on the Derby list by points, will be saddled by new trainer Mark Casse, who takes over from Stanley Gold. Fellowship was third in the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (gr. II) and Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) prior to the Florida Derby and may prefer the cut back to a one-turn-mile and softer company.
Brittlyn Stable's Forevamo, by Uncle Mo (who has three Derby runners from his first crop), was second to Gun Runner in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) and fifth behind Gun Runner and others in the TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (gr. II), both at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. Forevamo's lone win in seven starts came at a mile at Delta Downs Racetrack, Casino & Hotel last fall.
Also shortening up from two-turn starts is Calumet Farm's homebred Star Hill (Elusive Quality —Padmore, by French Deputy). His maiden win came at seven furlongs in February, and he then ran third in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) and was fifth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland.
Sprinter Cocked and Loaded was third last time out in the seven-furlong Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct Racetrack. The bay colt by Colonel John won the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) on the Churchill main track last September and also won the 5 1/2-furlong Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park.
Third in the Iroquois was Albaugh Family Stables' Unbridled Outlaw, stablemate of Derby runner Brody's Cause. Trainer Dale Roman pitched the son of Unbridled's Song into the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) last out without success.
Reddam Racing's homebred Ralis was a grade I winner at 2, taking Saratoga's Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) at seven furlongs, but has yet to transfer that form at 3. The bay colt ran 10th behind Cupid in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park in mid-March, then was fifth in the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes (gr. III) at Turfway Park going nine furlongs. The Spiral was run on Polytrack.
Mario Gutierrez will break Ralis from post 2.
