Passion for Action kicked late to take the $150,000 Vigil Stakes (Can-III) and improved his record at Woodbine to three wins in six starts.
Jockey Eurico Da Silva gave Ben Hutzel's homebred son of Speightstown a patient ride in a tightly packed field of five that tracked through opening fractions of :23.14 and :45.79 led by Black Hornet. At the top of the stretch, Passion for Action took command of the race going around the field while even-money favorite Stacked Deck squeezed through on the rail.
Passion for Action drew away and held off a determined Stacked Deck to win by a length in a final time of 1:21.65 for seven furlongs. Goodoldhockeygame was third by 2 3/4 lengths.
The winner is two-for-two in stakes company at Woodbine this year, having won the Jacques Cartier Stakes April 9. Passion for Action is trained by Michael De Paulo.
Passion for Action is the second foal out of stakes winner Maritime Passion, a daughter of Stormy Atlantic . Her first foal is the stakes-placed gelding Maritime Pulpit (by Pulpit). Hutzel bought the mare in 2007 for $80,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
