The overnight rating for the race portion of the May 7 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) was down almost 14% from last year to 9.3 with a 21 share, according to Nielsen ratings and NBC Sports Group, which televised the first leg of the Triple Crown from Churchill Downs.
The Derby, won by Reddam Racing's undefeated Nyquist, went off at about 6:50 p.m. EDT as part of a program on NBC that ran from 4-7:30 p.m.
NBC has televised the Kentucky Derby since 2001. Last year's Derby, won by Zayat Stables' American Pharoah , earned a 10.8 overnight rating, the highest in more than 10 years. In 2014 the reported overnight rating was 10.1.
The top local markets for the Derby race telecast were Louisville, where Churchill is located, with a 33.7 overnight/62 share; Cincinnati, Ohio, 16.6/33; Ft. Myers, Fla., 16.5/30; West Palm Beach, Fla., 14.6/27; Tampa, Fla., 14.2/29; Buffalo, N.Y., 13.6/25; Richmond, Va., 13.3/26; Pittsburgh, Pa., 13.1/28; Hartford, Conn., 12.5/24; and Denver, Colo., and Orlando and Jacksonville, Fla., 12.2.
