Wallenda

Grade I winner and millionaire Wallenda was put down May 9 at Old Friends Retirement Farm near Georgetown, Ky. The 26-year-old horse battled a bad foot throughout his life and showed great courage.

A son of Gulch—So Glad, by Liloy, Wallenda was purchased by Cot Campbell at the 1992 Fasig-Tipton Florida February select sale of 2-year-olds for $43,000.

“He had a pretty bad ankle problem,” Campbell said, “but he worked out awfully well for us.”

Wallenda won the 1993 Super Derby (gr. I) and Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) for Campbell’s Dogwood Stable and trainer Frank Alexander. He had also taken the 1992 Cowdin Stakes (gr. II) and won the 1994 Stuyvesant Handicap (gr. III). In a 33-race career, he won seven times and earned $1,205,929.

A difficult horse to handle in his early years, Wallenda had what Campbell described as a “vivid personality.” After his racing career, he stood in the United States at Dixiana Farm near Lexington, then went to New Zealand and Japan before being returned to this country.  He was bred by Haras Santa Maria de Araras and Peter Brant in Florida.

He has resided at Old Friends since 2007.
