Reddam Racing's Nyquist is scheduled to make his first visit to the track at Pimlico Race Course the morning of May 11 as he begins preparations for the May 21 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
Nyquist, undefeated in eight starts, won the May 7 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and shipped to Maryland May 9.
Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill, said Nyquist had a quiet morning May 10 while walking the shedrow at Barn D, which is adjacent to the Preakness Stakes Barn in the complex behind the Pimlico grandstand. Nyquist and six other O'Neill runners are stabled in the same barn the trainer used in 2012, when Reddam Racing's Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another won the Preakness.
Sisterson said Land Over Sea, expected to race in the May 20 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II), is slated to follow Nyquist to the racetrack at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Land Over Sea finished second in the May 6 Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I).
Sisterson said O'Neill will continue with the training program that has yielded good results: alternating days of galloping and jogging. He said he doesn't expect that O'Neill, who is scheduled to arrive in Baltimore May 12, will send the colt out for a timed breeze between the Derby and Preakness.
"We didn't work I'll Have Another, so I don't think we'll work Nyquist," Sisterson said. "I'm just keeping him happy. There's not much we can do in two weeks. I think his record speaks for itself, and we're not going to change anything from what we've done with him in the past."
