A handful of older filly and mare stakes winners will try to regain their black-type mojo in the $150,000 Beaugay Stakes (gr. IIIT) going 1 1/16 miles on Belmont Park's Widener Turf Course May 14.
Recepta, owned by Phillips Racing Partnership and Pam Gartin, leads the clutch of females who found mixed success in graded stakes last year and look again to prove themselves in top company.
The 5-year-old daughter of Speightstown —Honor Bestowed, by Honor Grades, has only thrown in a couple of poor finishes in her last five starts, which go back to June 27, 2015. The races that didn't go her way include off-the-board finishes in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) against males, in which she got bumped with an eighth of a mile to run; and in the Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland April 16, where she finished fifth. Both of these races were won by Tepin, 2015's champion turf female.
Recepta is trained by Jimmy Toner and will be ridden by John Velazquez. She is 2-for-2 at Belmont and has won once at the Beaugay distance, though she seems to prefer a mile.
Another Beaugay challenger who's chased Tepin's tail to the wire is My Miss Sophia, a 5-year-old daughter of Unbridled's Song—Wildwood Flower, by Langfuhr, who is owned by Alpha Delta Stable. Trained by Bill Mott, the chestnut mare will be making her first start of the year. She last finished third to Tepin and Crowley's Law in the First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) going a mile at Keeneland last October.
My Miss Sophia is a half sister to 2015 Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Materiality who was retired from racing last August due to a soft tissue injury.
The only horse coming into the Beaugay off a win is Tapitry, a 4-year-old daughter of Tapit —My Trusty Cat, by Tale of the Cat, who is owned by Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen and trained by Shug McGaughey. Tapitry won a $62,500 1 1/16-mile allowance/optional claiming race April 9 on the grass at Aqueduct Racetrack by 1 1/2 lengths over group III German-bred winner LaSaldana.
