Reddam Racing’s Nyquist went twice around the Pimlico Race Course main track the morning of May 20 in his final preparations for the Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
“He went really well,” trainer Doug O’Neill said of the undefeated Uncle Mo colt who won the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). “It was designed to be a nice, easy day. He jogged two miles and looked really composed.”
Nyquist will walk the shedrow for about 30 minutes the morning of the race, O’Neill said.
“It has been a really awesome journey, and he continues to move forward,” the trainer said of Nyquist, a five-time grade I winner who carries a perfect 8-for-8 record into the second leg of the Triple Crown.
The latest weather forecast for the Baltimore area calls for an 80% chance of rain and a high temperature in the upper 50s. The heaviest rain is predicted to fall in the morning, with a diminishing chance of showers late afternoon.
O’Neill again said he’s not focused on the weather.
“With a horse like Nyquist I’m not overly concerned about the weather,” he said. “We’re not changing anything shoeing-wise.”
