Ranlo Investments' Lady Shipman overcame the outside post in a 12-horse field to win the $100,000 The Very One Stakes May 21 at Pimlico Race Course for her second victory in as many starts since her trip to Dubai in March.
Ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, Lady Shipman fired out from post 12 but so did several others, which left her wide in the backstretch in the five-furlong turf test for fillies and mares as Everything Lovely, in her first start since last September, maintained her lead. Lady Shipman then ranged up to engage the front-runner on the turn, took over entering the stretch, and pulled away to win by 2 1/4 lengths in :57.85 on a course rated good.
Joya Real, who was second to Ageless in last year's The Very One for fillies and mares, rallied for second in her first start of the year, while Exaggerated, winner of the Giant's Causeway Stakes at Keeneland in April, finished third.
Lady Shipman, who won the License Fee Stakes at six furlongs on the turf May 1 at Belmont Park, paid $2.80 to win. The 4-year-old filly by Midshipman out of the Mutakddim mare Sumthingtotalkabt was bred in Kentucky by Randall Lowe.
Lady Shipman finished an excellent second to Mongolian Saturday in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) for trainer Kathleen O'Connell. For her 2016 campaign she was transferred to McLaughlin's barn. She won the Ladies Turf Sprint Feb. 6 at Gulfstream Park, and then was shipped to the United Arab Emirates for the Al Quoz Sprint (UAE-I). She finished seventh there after a poor start.
Lady Shipman now has 11 wins, two seconds, and two thirds in 16 starts.
