Hall of Fame: Derby Success Propels Borel

A three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Calvin Borel, 46, ranks 28th all-time among leading riders by wins, with 5,031 from 33,980 mounts as he is inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.



Borel, who has ridden the earners of more than $122 million, won the Derby three times in a four-year span with Street Sense   in 2007, Mine That Bird in 2009, and Super Saver   in 2010. He was also the regular rider of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra.



One of two riders with more than 1,000 wins at Churchill Downs, Borel also won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2010. He has earned riding titles at Churchill Downs, Oaklawn Park, Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs, and Delta Downs. He has also been inducted into the Arkansas Sport Hall of Fame and Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.



Born in St. Martin Parish, La., Borel credits long-time agent, Jerry Hissam, for his success and dedicated the race at Oaklawn Park where he rode his 5,000th victory to the agent who was ill at the time.
