If you think the best part of the year in Thoroughbred racing is behind us, we’re just getting warmed up. With can’t miss meetings at Saratoga Race Course and Del Mar fast approaching plus, of course, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in the fall, buckle up for a 5-month thrill ride.
1. The best is yet to come: The Breeders’ Cup is horse racing’s World Championships. The best-of-the-best racehorses on the planet come together to duke it out over a two-day racing festival at beautiful Santa Anita Park just outside of Los Angeles, Calif. It’s an event that has a little bit of everything: high-level competition, lots of betting, high fashion, an amazing destination, gourmet food, celebrities and hats … definitely lots of hats.

2. Chrome’s Comeback: California Chrome, who became a national icon with his Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes wins, hopes to be back in a quest to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He’s taking a brief summer vacation, but his connections have said that the Breeders’ Cup Classic is their end goal.
3. It’s not just California Chrome who will return: The second half of the year is when top horses of all ages compete against each other. You’ll see the 3-year-olds that ran in the Triple Crown races battling older horses in high-stakes competition in a bid to make it to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
4. The betting: You can pick your favorite horses, jockeys, owners and trainers in the races leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, and then make lots of money betting on them during the two-day World Championships. 6. Can’t get to the track? You can watch at home! Between the Jockey Club Tour on Fox and the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series on NBC there is going to be a lot of horse racing going on, and you can catch it all from the comfort of your living room.
7. The stars of tomorrow are running today: If you’re still obsessed with the Triple Crown, then there’s lots to be excited about in the summer and fall. Since the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes are restricted to horses that are three years of age, you can see possible runners on next year’s Triple Crown trail running today in 2-year-old races.
8. This is the time of year that new stars can and will emerge: Horses that were on the Triple Crown trail might mature into their talents in the second half of the year, or a new star will begin to shine in the quest for the Breeders’ Cup.

The Breeders’ Cup is sort of the alpha and omega of high-end horse racing: It’s where the sport’s brightest hopes for the future compete in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (these are the horses that you’ll probably see in next year’s Triple Crown events) and it’s also where the best horses in the world compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. It’s not unusual to see horses that have competed in Triple Crown races years apart run against each other in the Classic. The second season is when the competition at the track really heats up in a quest for Breeders’ Cup glory.
10. Summer and fall are the best times to get out to the races: Some of America’s premier destination racetracks are running in the warmer months, from Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York to Del Mar in Southern California, from Monmouth Park on the Jersey Shore to Chicago’s showplace Arlington International. These are the tracks that attract the nation’s best horses, plus they’re the places to see and be seen.

11. You can bring your fashion game: Every track has its own individual style, from the classic chic of Saratoga to the beachy vibe of Del Mar. When you head into summer and fall racing, it’s a chance to put your best look forward.
12. It’s affordable: Can you imagine heading to a playoff game and being charged $10 or less for a general admission ticket? Summer and fall is Thoroughbred racing’s playoff season, and most tracks not only charge a nominal fee to get in, but you can also bring your own food, drinks and even games, like cornhole. Just make sure you find out the rules of what you can and can’t bring before you go!
