Breeders' Cup members election set to begin

Thirteen of the 30 individuals on the ballot for election as Breeders' Cup members are seeking re-election to the 39-member board, the organization announced May 25.

Online voting for Breeders' Cup foal and stallion nominators will begin June 6 at the Breeders' Cup election website. The 19 individuals who receive the most votes will serve four-year terms.

Members are elected every other year by foal and stallion nominators through a proportional voting system based on the level of nominations paid to the organization. The members meet each July to elect representatives for the smaller Breeders' Cup board of directors, which oversees the activities of the organization.

The following are the 30 candidates for election, with current members noted with an asterisk:

Current members of the 14-person board of directors are Bill Farish, who serves as chairman; Banke; Antony Beck; Bobby Flay; Craig Fravel, president of the organization; Fred Hertrich III; Roy Jackson; Bret Jones; Tom Ludt; Clem Murphy; Oppenheim; Dan Pride; Richardson; and Walden.

Meanwhile, Fravel confirmed that Breeders' Cup is considering leasing office space in the old Fayette County Courthouse in downtown Lexington. The building is slated for a $30 million renovation that will include offices, restaurants, bars, and rooms for events.

Breeders' Cup offices currently are located just off Harrodsburg Road in Lexington.

"We're considering it," Fravel said May 25. "We've had a number of meetings. We're not at the point of having a deal yet, but we are interested and think it's a great project for Lexington."
