Jockey Daniel Centeno, who suffered a fractured collarbone after a fall in the fourth race at Pimlico Race Course May 21, returned home to Tampa, Fla., to continue his recovery.
Centeno, 44, was injured when his mount, the 4-year-old Harlan's Holiday filly Pramedya, suffered a catastrophic injury on the final turn of the 1 1/16-mile optional claiming/allowance race on the turf. Pramedya, trained by Arnaud Delacour for owner and breeder Lael Stables, was euthanized.
“It’s not a bad break at all,” said Kevin Witte, Centeno’s agent. “It’s not displaced and it doesn’t require surgery. They estimate six to eight weeks, possibly sooner. It’s good news in the sense that it was a horrific spill and he’s lucky he got away just with what happened.”
Centeno, who has more than 2,300 wins, was second in the jockey standings at the recent Tampa Bay Downs meet with 98 wins and nearly $1.5 million in purse earnings. He regularly rides at Mid-Atlantic tracks in the spring, summer, and early fall.
