Classic winner and freshman sire Shackleford got his first winner May 27 at Gulfstream Park when Little Nappy held off a late challenge to win a 4 1/2 -furlong $55,000 maiden special weight race by a nose.
The colt out of French Laundry, by Seeking the Gold, is owned by Priscilla Vaccarezza's Little Dreams Racing and trained by Carlo Vaccarezza, who purchased the colt out of the Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale for $8,000. Little Nappy was bred in New York by Spruce Lane Farm and the Shackleford Syndicate. He's been offered at auction two other times, going for $57,000 as a short yearling to Machmer Hall through the Keeneland January winter mixed sale. The colt wasoffered again at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred sale at Saratoga by Select Sales but got bought back for $38,000.
Little Nappy faced six other challengers. He took control of the race heading into the turn and opened up a two-length lead by mid-stretch. A late charging Skinflint, by Super Saver , fell just short at the wire. The final time was :52.62.
French Laundry is a winning daughter of Aaron's Terms, who has produced nine winners, including stakes winner Hoosick Falls and stakes-placed Manor Prospect.
Shackleford, who won the 2001 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and the grade I Metropolitan and Clark handicaps, stands at Darby Dan Farm for $20,000.
