Steeplechase Rider Injured in Monmouth Race

Description:

Steeplechase jockey Bernard Dalton sustained a fractured right clavicle following a spill nearly one mile into the third race at Monmouth Park June 13, a $30,000 allowance/optional claiming hurdle event.

Dr. Angelo Chinnici, medical director for the racetrack, reported the injury suffered by Dalton, who was to be sent to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch for further evaluation.

Born in Ireland, the 45-year-old Dalton currently lives in Camden, S.C.  Dalton is typically among the top steeplechase riders in the country.

Dalton was aboard Run to Class, who was involved in a three-horse spill over the fifth fence in the 2 1/4-mile turf event. All three horses checked out in satisfactory condition following the incident, according to the track, as were riders Jeff Murphy (aboard Broxbourne) and apprentice Kieran Norris (atop Labonte).
