Beholder 'Questionable' for Del Mar Meet

Two-time Eclipse Award champion Beholder is likely out until this fall as she recovers from a cut on her left hind pastern sustained when finishing fourth in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park.
"So far it looks like it's healing well," Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella said June 12. "We've not had any infection, which is the important thing. It's questionable whether she would make the Del Mar meet."
Beholder was the even-money favorite in the field of six older fillies and mares in the 1 1/16-mile Ogden Phipps June 7. Closing four wide into the stretch to reach contention in the drive, she closed to about a length of front-running Close Hatches with a furlong to run but failed to close any further ground. Close Hatches defeated Princess of Sylmar by a head.
Mandella was unsure when Beholder was injured in the race. He described it afterward as "a nasty cut."
Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Beholder won Eclipse honors as the nation's outstanding 2-year-old filly in 2012 and outstanding 3-year-old filly last year. The daughter of Henny Hughes has won nine of 14 career starts, including five grade I races, for earnings of $3,188,300.
Among her wins are last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) and the 2012 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I).
