Delayed, But OBS Under Tack Show Proceeds

Following an approximate 45-minute delay, the June 7 under tack show workouts for next week’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2-year-olds in training sale went on as scheduled, with two juveniles sharing the fastest work times each for the distances of an eighth of a mile and a quarter-mile.

The delayed start enabled the track maintenance crew to perform work on the all-weather Safetrack surface following three inches of rain dumped on the Ocala, Fla., area when Tropical Storm Colin stormed through late Monday. Although the impact of the deluge was minimal since OBS has an artificial surface, management wanted the surface to be as consistent as possible with the previous workout sessions Sunday and Monday, said sales director Tod Wojciechowski. The extra time also enabled maintenance personnel to clear some of the standing water on the horse paths.

Consignor Barry Eisaman said the track was a little slower Tuesday but that sellers and buyers were fortunate that OBS has an artificial track.

“This track can take a large downpour and be ready to go after an hour,” Eisaman said. “With the older, conventional surface we had, you would have had a sloppy mess. When it does rain a lot, it slows the track so it was a little slower than in prior days but safe.”

Working the eighth-mile distance in :10 were a Candy Ride   colt and a Put It Back filly, while the quarter-mile fastest time on the day of :21 was turned in by an Algorithms   colt and a Macho Uno   filly. Both times are the second-fastest at their respective distances after the first three of six work sessions.

Consigned as Hip 484 by Bobby Dodd, agent, the Candy Ride colt is out of La Maestranza, a full sister to Irish stakes winner Great War Eagle. La Maestranza and Great War Eagle are both out of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner Cash Run. The colt’s third dam is grade I winner Shared Interest, the dam of grade I winner and sire Forestry. Bred in Kentucky by Town and Country Farms, the colt was acquired by Grand Oaks for $185,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale.

The Put It Back filly, Hip 592 from Weston Thoroughbred Training and Sales, agent, descends from the family of group I winner and sire Miswaki and was bred in Florida by Debbie Wine and Linda Evans.

Consigned by Price Thoroughbreds, agent, as Hip 435, the Algorithms colt is a half brother to stakes-placed Clearance Clarence and is from the family of stakes winners Tough It Out and My Mogul. He was bred in Kentucky by William L. S. Landes and was purchased by Price Thoroughbreds for $38,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

The Macho Uno filly, Hip 453, was bred in Kentucky by Morris B. Floyd, Greg Ginter, Mike Bowling, and Mike Eaves, and is a half sister to this year's California Oaks winner Kiss N Scat and is from the family of Painter, a champion in Argentina and a sire. She was bought at the Keeneland September sale by Quarter Pole Enterprises for $115,000 and is consigned by Eddie Woods, agent.
