Sole Power Repeats in King's Stand

Coming with a late burst of speed on the far side, Sole Power closed to his second straight win in the $637,500 King's Stand Stakes (Eng-I) June 17 at Royal Ascot. The 7-year-old British-bred son of Kyllachy won last year's King's Stand and was third in the race in 2012.
Sole Power covered the five-furlong trip over a straight course listed as "good" in :58.85 and motored past Stepper Point to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Stepper Point, sent off at 50-1, edged 3-1 favorite Hot Streak by a neck. It was another neck back to Medicean Man in fourth. Sixteen went postward.
Sole Power was ridden by Richard Hughes who scored his second major win on the day, having taken the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) aboard Toronado in the race before the King's Stand.
The winner, owned by Mrs. S. Power, is trained by Edward Lynam.
A 5-1 shot in England, in U.S. pools Sole Power paid $13.80 to win and $4.60 to place-show. Stepper Point paid $24.20 to place-show, and third-place finisher Medicean Man paid $3.40. The $1 9-10 exacta returned $306.80.
Sole Power, out of the Distant View mare Demerger, was making his 41st start. He now has nine wins (six stakes wins), seven seconds, and six thirds while racing in Europe, Dubai, and Hong Kong. He was second last year the Longines Hong Kong Sprint (HK-I).
Sole Power spent the winter in Dubai, running in a pair of graded races at Meydan. He was a close-up fourth March 8 to Shea Shea (the second choice in the King's Stand) in the Meydan Sprint Sponsored by Arabian Adventures (UAE-III) at about five furlongs on the turf, then was seventh in the March 29 Al Quoz Sprint Empowered by Ipic (UAE-I). Back home in England he won the five-furlong Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes (Eng-III) May 3 at Newmarket by a half-length.
