The 4-year-old colt Bodhisattva, who won the 2015 Federico Tesio Stakes, returned to Pimlico Race Course June 19 and won his first race in more than a year.
Owned and trained by Jose Corrales, Bodhisattva earned a start in last year's Preakness Stakes (gr. I) after his game win in the Tesio in April at Pimlico. But he finished a distant eighth in the second leg of the Triple Crown and didn't fare well during stays in Alberta, Canada, and Southern California.
The California-bred by Student Council returned to Maryland earlier this spring and finally got back to the winner's circle with a win in allowance company. He's now two-for-two on the Pimlico dirt.
"(Jockey) Taylor (Hole) did a very good job with the horse all the way around," Corrales said of Bodhisattva, who rallied from sixth and last to defeat favored Mr. Palmer by almost four lengths. "I rode a lot of horses and I rode horses like that. Sometimes, horses make one move and they freshen up and run better. You don't have to rush them and put them on the lead.
"He's the kind of horse that if you don't do the right thing, he will not run anywhere. When I saw his head coming up at the three-eighths pole, I thought we had a chance."
Bodhisattva now has four victories in 19 starts for earnings of $207,883.
