Page McKenney Recovering From Tendon Filling

There is no timetable for a return to the races for Adam Staple and Jalin Stable's millionaire Page McKenney, but he continues to recover from filling in a tendon that led to his scratch from the May 20 Sagamore Spirit Pimlico Special (gr. III).

Trainer Mary Eppler told Maryland Jockey Club media officials June 23 a recent ultrasound performed on the 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred gelding by Eavesdropper revealed no new swelling or damage to the tendon.

"We try to be overly cautious with all our horses," Eppler said. "We did an ultrasound and it was exactly the same as the day of the Pimlico Special, which is good because a lot of times it can be worse 10 days or two weeks later. So we started some treatment on it. That'll go another two weeks, and we'll ultrasound it again in a month."

Eppler said the gelding undergoes shock-wave therapy once every two weeks for a total of three treatments.

"He's doing fine," she said. "His attitude and his appetite are great. He's going to have a rest for probably a couple months at least, maybe up to a year," she said. "We're just taking our time with him."

Page McKenney, a late-bloomer, was claimed for $16,000 the summer of 2013 and since then has made most of his $1 million-plus in earnings. He's a nine-time stakes winner; his biggest victory came in the grade III General George Stakes at Laurel Park in February.
