Updates on the Equine Injury Database and compounded medications are part of the agenda for the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit June 28 at the Keeneland sale pavilion in Lexington.
It will be the seventh summit, which was first held in 2006 to recommend actions and policies regarding the health and welfare of racehorses. The event will be streamed live on the Jockey Club website and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation website.
Other topics on the agenda include biosecurity and the Equine Disease Communications Center; respiratory and airway health; the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory, updates on which are regularly given at the summit; biomarker research; nutraceuticals; nutrition and balanced feed programs for equines; regulating use of the riding crop; protocols for when jockeys should be permitted to ride after sustaining an injury; an update from the American Association of Equine Practitioners Racing Committee; and the importance of physical inspections in diagnosing lameness.
The summit will begin at 8:15 a.m. EDT. Organizers estimated that 1,500 individuals from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, France, Sweden, and Spain watched the live stream of the 2015 summit, and that about 200 people attended the event at Keeneland.
