Evangeline Downs will be hosting its marquee night of Thoroughbred racing July 2 with Louisiana Legends Night. The 10-race program will include eight Louisiana-bred stakes races worth $775,000 in purse money.
Louisiana Legends Night's featured event is the $125,000 Louisiana Legends Classic. The 2-1 morning line favorite in the field of six will be Sunbean, a 6-year-old gelding by Brahms, who has earned $1,059,750 to date. Sunbean has a perfect three-for-three record at Evangeline Downs, winning the 2013 Louisiana Legends Mile, the 2014 Louisiana Legends Classic, and the 2014 Evangeline Mile. He also won his most recent start March 26 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in the Star Guitar Stakes. Sunbean is trained by Ron Faucheux and was bred in Louisiana by the owner Brittlyn Stable.
String King is the second million-dollar earner entered in the Louisiana Legends Night program. The 8-year-old gelded son of Crowned King has been installed as the 4-1 morning line favorite in the field of 12 for the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf. He will be defending his win in the race last year, which was taken off the turf. He has been facing graded stakes company in his last three starts at the Fair Grounds, and Saturday's race will mark his first start since March, when he finished eighth in the Muniz Memorial Handicap (gr. II). String King was bred by the owner-trainer Charles Smith.
Painting the Sky, the dual registered Thoroughbred-Paint from the Brett Brinkman barn, has been entered in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Soiree. The daughter of Yankee Gentleman, a homebred racing for Sandra New, has two wins from five starts. The Soiree will be her first stakes attempt.
Couche Couche, a two-time stakes winner this season at Evangeline Downs, has been entered in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Cheval. The gelding by Pulling Punches has won two of his three starts at Evangeline, capturing the Ragin Cajun Stakes and the Equine Sales Derby this year. He is trained by Karl Broberg, who currently leads the nation in wins, and owned by Jerry Namy.
Evangeline Downs will conduct live racing on its usual Wednesday-Saturday schedule this week. Post time each night will be 5:50 p.m. CDT.
