Great at 8: Dimension Takes King Edward

At age 8, Dimension is enjoying his best season of racing.

Rallying toward the center of the course, Dimension scored an upset victory in the $200,000 King Edward Stakes (Can-II) July 2 at Woodbine. The 1 1/4-length victory gives Riverside Bloodstock's Dimension two straight graded stakes wins at Woodbine, the first time the Medicean gelding has ever won two graded stakes in the same season. 

Trained by Conor Murphy, Dimension entered Saturday's mile turf test off a half-length victory in the seven-furlong Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-II) June 5 on the Woodbine turf, upsetting the field that day at 20-1. Dimension again received little respect from the bettors Saturday, sent off at 17-1.

With jockey David Moran showing the way, Dimension rated off the pace in the well-bunched field of eight 3-year-olds and up early as Smokem Kitten and Solemn Tribute closely pursued longshot Hammerstein through a quarter mile in :22.76 and half mile in :45.53. 

Turning for home, Moran angled Dimension four wide, and he responded. Rallying near the center of the course in early stretch before taking command in midstretch, Dimension then held sway to complete the mile in 1:33.19. Solemn Tribute just held off a late surge from Tower of Texas to hold second by a head. Favorite Full Mast placed fourth.

"We just wanted to do the same as last time—get him happy, and comfortable," Moran said. "At the three-eighths pole he was running over the back of them. He quickened up smart, and he ran right to the wire. He's confident right now. He's really back to himself."

Dimension returned $37.10, $14.60, and $10.90 across the board while Solemn Tribute paid $8.50 and $5.70 for the minor awards. Tower of Texas returned $4.90 to show.

Bred in England by Cheveley Park Stud, Dimension is out of the Green Desert mare Palatial, who also has produced two-time group II winner Spacious.
