Trainer Mac Robertson swept the two Minnesota-bred stakes July 3 at Canterbury Park, which reported record attendance and healthy pari-mutuel handle on a program that began in the late afternoon.
The Sunday stakes—the Blair's Cove for 3-year-old males and the Princess Elaine for 3-year-old fillies—were run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Robertson won the Blair's Cove with A P Is Loose (by Monarchos ) for owner and breeder Joel Zamzow, and the Princess Elaine with Dear Fay (by Ghazi) for owner and breeder Bo Vujovich.
"That was a good day," said Robertson, who through the racing of July 3 ranked second in the trainer standings at Canterbury behind Robertino Diodoro with 46 victories, and led the standings by earnings with $1,280,042.
Track officials reported attendance of 21,453 for the holiday weekend card that began just after 4 p.m. CDT. All-sources handle for 11 races was $1,237,795, with $464,763 wagered on track.
Canterbury for its 2016 meet greatly reduced its pari-mutuel takeout across the board in an effort to generate interest in its racing product both on and off track. Takeout ranges from 15%-18% depending on wager type.
