Presque Isle Downs juvenile victor Jay Wow became the first winner for Darby Dan Farm sire Jersey Town July 6.
Starting as the favorite in a field of five for a five-furlong maiden claiming race for juvenile fillies, Jay Wow went straight to the front under jockey Arlenne Cox and cleared out for a two-length victory in a final time of :59.62 over the Tapeta surface.
Bred by Charles Fipke in Kentucky, Jay Wow was a $2,500 bargain buy for owner-trainer Wayne Rice. She is the first foal out of Ima Soul Miss (Perfect Soul ), a winner of three races; and from the family of grade I millionaires Tonalist, Havre de Grace, Riskaverse, as well as broodmare of the year Toll Booth.
Jersey Town is a son of Speightstown out of multiple grade I winner Jersey Girl (Belong to Me), and traces back to Fool-Me-Not, the dam of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Foolish Pleasure.
Second in the British Columbia Derby (Can-III) at 3, Jersey Town emerged as a topliner at 4. He won the Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) and placed in three other graded races at that age. He placed three times at 5, including a second in the Forego Stakes (gr. I), and at 6 he won the Kelso Handicap (gr. II).
Jersey Town retired to Darby Dan Farm, near Lexington, Ky., as one of the most accomplished sons of leading sire Speightstown at stud, with earnings of $819,668. He stood the 2016 season for a fee of $10,000.
