Champions Beholder and Songbird both worked July 9 at Santa Anita Park toward top-level summer affairs on opposite coasts.
Fox Hill Farm's undefeated Songbird worked six furlongs in 1:13 2/5 under exercise rider Edgar Rodriguez and earned the rare West Coast "breezing" tag for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in preparation for the July 24 Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course.
"It was a very good work," Hollendorfer said. "She galloped out nicely (to seven furlongs) in 1:26 and out a mile in (1:39 4/5)."
Spendthrift Farm's Beholder worked seven furlongs in company under jockey Gary Stevens in 1:26 2/5 under the watchful eye of trainer Richard Mandella. Stablemate Volume was given a six-furlong clocking of 1:14 2/5.
"It was just a nice, steady work—nothing fancy," Stevens said of her drill for the July 30 Clement L. Hirsch (gr. I) at Del Mar. "She ships (to Del Mar July 11), so Richard didn't want anything too fancy. It was good—a typical Beholder work."
