Jockey Tyler Gaffalione continued his hot start for Gulfstream Park's summer meet July 9, when he rode five winners during the 12-race card.
The 21-year-old Davie, Fla., native, who was honored with an Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding apprentice jockey in 2015, scored aboard Shere Khan ($2.80) in the first race, Blue Harbor ($4.40) in the second, Pomme d'Or ($3.20) in the fourth, Go Salvatore Go ($3.60) in the fifth, and Starship Tammy ($4.20) in the 11th. Gaffalione has ridden 13 winners in the first seven programs of the summer meet.
"The trainers all brought their horses over here ready to run today," said Gaffalione, whose father Steve Gaffalione rode 842 winners while riding primarily in South Florida. "They did a great job preparing them to run today. I have to give them all the credit for this day. I owe it all to them for being loyal to me and always sticking with me, and giving me the opportunity. I also want to thank my agent (Walter Blum Jr.) and my family. It's been a good run."
Gaffalione previously rode five winners on one card, all trained by Ralph Nicks, at Gulfstream Sept. 20 and he is the defending summer meet riding champ.
