Barretts will hold its fifth racehorse sale at Del Mar July 23 and expects up to 40 horses to be offered.
The auction on the second Saturday of the track's summer meet will begin 20 minutes after the final race that afternoon in the paddock.
Sale company officials said that unlike previous paddock sales, there will be a "training preview" on the main track at Del Mar immediately following regular morning workouts July 22. Workouts usually end at about 10 a.m. PDT.
All works by horses in the sale will be at least three-eighths of a mile, and videos will be posted online and as the horses come into the sales ring. All unraced horses must work at the preview; the session is open to any horses that have raced.
California-based horses as well as out-of-state entrants are expected to be available for bid. Horses that have been racing recently outside California are eligible to immediately take part in the track's "Ship and Win" program, now in its sixth year.
Horses that qualify and are bought at the auction sale will earn a check for $1,000 when they make their first start at Del Mar, as well as be eligible to add a 30% bonus on top of their regular purse earnings in their initial Del Mar start.
At the 2015 paddock sale, 19 horses sold for $728,500 (an average of $38,342). Over the past four years, an average of 20 head sold for an average gross of $1,266,375, or $65,650 per horse.
Shh She's Ours, who sold at the Del Mar racehorse sale in 2014, has won her four most recent starts. The 4-year-old Tiz Wonderful filly last time out won the Desert Storm II Stakes June 26 at Santa Anita Park.
Barretts, Del Mar, and the Thoroughbred Owners of California will host a free "Buying a Racehorse" seminar and preview of the sale from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Veranda Café at the track July 23. More information is available at the TOC website.
