A bay colt by Tapit from an active stakes-laden female family was bought by Cromwell Bloodstock for $450,000, becoming the second-highest priced purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July selected yearling sale.
The colt, consigned as Hip 263 by Ashview Farm, was bred in Kentucky by Ashview and Colts Neck Stables. He is out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Ithinkisawapudycat, a half sister to Canadian champion Spring in the Air. Multiple grade III winner and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) runner-up Tejano Run and British group II winner More Royal are in the colt’s third darm.
Sweet Loretta, his 2-year-old full sister who was a $750,000 weanling purchase, romped to victory for trainer Todd Pletcher at Monmouth Park June 18 in her first start.
"He was raised at the right place and has an athletic shape, and I like him," said Cromwell's Gatewood Bell. "I'll tell you in two years (if the price was good value), but I thought that was fair. Tapits are tough to buy anyway. Maybe some of the big buyers weren't here but he made what he was worth. I love that bottom family. He's very athletic, smooth top, good enough mind. He had high enough energy but didn't lose his mind selling."
Bell said a partnership group would be put together to race the colt, and that he would not be pinhooked into a 2017 juvenile sale.
"I'm not that brave," he said.
