Hip 222, a Curlin colt, brought $475,000.

A beautiful son of Curlin   lit up the bid board at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July selected yearling sale when he was purchased by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds for $475,000.

The price was the highest of the sale at the time the colt went through the ring mid-afternoon July 12.

Consigned by St. George Sales, agent, the colt is a half brother to stakes winners Swinger’s Party and Hubba Shake and from the extended female family of Ogygian, Honour and Glory, and Lookinforthebigone.

The colt, out of the winning $84,885-earner Franscat (by Stormin Fever), was bred in Florida by Miller Racing.

Randy Hartley said the colt will be owned in partnership by Hartley/DeRenzo with Mike Hall and Sam Ross of Breeze Easy Stable. He will be pinhooked into a 2017 juvenile sale and if he does not sell, will be raced by the partners.

“He’s our lucky number—222,” Hartley said. “We knew we were going to have to pay a lot for him. The sale is getting pretty strong here at the end. He’s got the whole package. If he can expand into that as a 2-year-old…”

Hartley said he thought the colt would sell for in excess of $300,000 and that he and the partners were willing to go higher because of the strength of the market.

“They (Breeze Easy) are new people in the game and they want to play so we’re trying to get top horses,” Hartley said. “They want to play at all levels.”

"He was very popular and we thought he'd bring some money,” said consignor Archie St. George. “He was a lovely horse and he deserved to bring plenty of money. That much I'm not quite sure, but lot of credit goes to the breeder, myron Miller and his team. They bred to the right horse and he was a lovely horse. Best of luck to Hartley/DeRenzo."
