The Maryland Racing Commission July 12 gave its approval for the sale of Rosecroft Raceway, a harness track located south of Washington, D.C., to The Stronach Group from Penn National Gaming Inc.
The deal was announced earlier this year. The Stronach Group owns and operates Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course under the Maryland Jockey Club banner.
Rosecroft, which recently has offered about 55 live racing programs per year, is a major simulcast outlet with total pari-mutuel handle of close to $40 million last year. The MJC is continuing to rebuild the off-track betting network in the state.
"We are looking forward to working at Rosecroft Raceway and growing the business," The Stronach Group said in a release. "Not only do we see this as an opportunity to expand the Maryland Jockey Club brand to a new market and make it easier for people to watch and wager on our Thoroughbred races, but we're particularly interested in growing Standardbred racing, which has a long and storied history in Maryland.
"We will begin to upgrade the Rosecroft facility when the sale is finalized in the coming weeks. We appreciate the work of the Maryland Racing Commission."
Live racing at Rosecroft resumes in September.
