The $200,000 Los Alamitos Derby (gr. II) headlines a stakes schedule worth $550,000 for the upcoming Los Angeles County Fair at Los Alamitos meet.
The 12-day season will begin Sept. 8 and continue through Sept. 25. Racing will be conducted on a Thursday-Sunday basis.
Offered during the Summer Thoroughbred Festival in July 2014 and 2015, the Derby, won previously by Shared Belief and Gimme Da Lute, will be run Sept. 24. Restricted to 3-year-olds, the Derby will be contested at 1 1/8 miles.
The $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis will be part of a stakes doubleheader Sept. 10. The Lewis, which is for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs, will share the spotlight with the $75,000 E.B. Johnston. The one-mile Johnston is for 3-year-olds and up that were bred or sired in California.
The Los Alamitos stakes schedule is completed by a pair of races for 2-year-olds: the $100,000 Barretts Debutante (Sept. 17) and the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile (Sept. 18). Both the Juvenile and Debutante. which is restricted to fillies, are at 6 1/2 furlongs and open to horses purchased at any Barretts sale.
