'Chome' Tops Poll, Tepin Ranked Second

California Chrome   remains the leading Thoroughbred in North America in the weekly NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll released July 18.

The all-time leading money-earner in the United States, California Chrome has led the poll for all 20 weeks of 2016 voting and clinched the most recent tally with 29 first-place votes and 388 points overall. California Chrome is expected to run July 23 in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar.

Tepin (10 first-place votes; 348 points) held second in the rankings, ahead of three-time Eclipse Award champion Beholder (267), who is preparing to run in the July 30 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar. Frosted (one first-place vote; 266 points) remains in fourth.

The top 10 is rounded out by Nyquist (189) who is expected to run in the Betfair Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park July 31; Songbird (175), the undefeated 3-year-old filly expected for the July 24 Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course; Melatonin (154); Flintshire (126); Catch a Glimpse (120); and Effinex (68).

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll is the sport's most comprehensive survey that ranks active North American-based Thoroughbreds. Every week journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. The poll concludes Nov. 7 following the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
