Due to extreme temperatures and a heat index exceeding 110 degrees forecast for the evening, Canterbury Park has canceled live racing for July 21, its next scheduled racing program.

Officials made the announcement July 20. The track plans to ask the Minnesota Racing Commission for approval to make up the day Thursday, Sept. 1.

“Forecasts call for a dangerously high heat index of more than 110 degrees,” Canterbury president Randy Sampson said. “After consulting with chief state veterinarian Dr. Lynn Hovda, we have determined it is best to be proactive and cancel tomorrow’s races. The health and safety of both our equine and human athletes is always our primary concern.

“We also do not want to inconvenience our guests and race fans with a last-minute decision.”

Live racing is scheduled to resume July 22 at 6:30 p.m. CDT with a 10-race program.
